چکیده

Loss of soil fertility through loss organic matter, leaching nutrients, the nutrient-laden topsoil, changes in soil-pH, reduction cation exchange capacity, salinization, water logging and other forms degradation are major problems associated with agricultural productivity oil producing areas Nigeria. This analysis investigated some selected physico-chemical properties wetland soils affected by crude spillage Bodo city Niger Delta region Field reconnaissance survey using a handheld Geographic Positioning system (GPS) technique involving random sampling, was used siting profile pits. The unpolluted samples were collected 50 meters away from polluted site but same geographic as control site. Soil based on degree horizon differentiation analyzed routine special analytical techniques. data subjected to variance Genstat program. Result shows that physical site: moisture content, bulk density, texture highly significant (p=0.01 0.05) when compared while chemical analysed especially pH, carbon-nitrogen ratio, available phosphorus spillage. Results this study affirm can have detrimental effect properties, which implies low thereby affect crop production increase food insecurity within Further studies more edaphic biotoxic metals their bioaccessibility crops growing waterside spill will surely enhance knowledge management these industrially influenced soils. Also, international national gas companies should carry out activities best practice.

Environmental Situation of an Agricultural Area in Akure, Nigeria, Based on Physico-Chemical Properties of Rainwater

Acid rain still poses a global problem today, exerting many adverse effects on man, animal, and materials. As its research question, the present study tries to find out whether or not acid rains exist in Akure, Nigeria. For so doing, it determines physico-chemical properties of rain water samples, namely pH, temp, Electrical Conductivity (EC), TDS, acidity, SO4-, NO2-, Cl-, and Free CO2. Accord...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments and soils from oil exploration areas of the Niger Delta, Nigeria.

The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from rivers and canals adjoining some oil exploration sites in the Niger Delta and surface soils from host communities were examined. The concentrations of 28 target PAHs ranged from 65 to 331 ng/g (average: 168 ng/g) and from 24 to 120 ng/g (average: 80 ng/g) in the sediment and soil samples, respectively. Two-ring PAHs w...

Assessment of physico-chemical properties and metal contents of water and sediments of Bodo Creek, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Some physico-chemical properties and the concentrations of the metals Fe, Mn, Ni, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, and Zn in water and sediments were examined from September 2011 to January 2012 in Bodo Creek, where oil spills have been recurrent. Temperature, pH, total dissolved solid, conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total hardness, su...

Tragedy of Commons: Analysis of Oil Spillage, Gas Flaring and Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta of Nigeria

The hue and cry about the stark despoliation of the Niger Delta has been ongoing; and the issues at stake have centered mostly on the gross and glaring underdevelopment in the area despite the vast resources that have accrued to the Nigerian state from the region. Perhaps the most disturbing, is that oil exploration and exploitation in the Niger Delta is carried out without regard to internatio...
